You’ve heard of Elf on the Shelf meme. Now get ready for a bunch of celebrities rhyming their names with other people — and things!
An Elf on the Shelf-themed rhyming meme has bubbled up on Instagram, and actors practically leapt at the chance to participate, much like a mischievous elf darting around a house (as the Elf on the Shelf is known to do).Elf on the Shelf meme
The current celebrity run of the meme started with “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star and “Coming to America” actress Garcelle Beauvais.
Beauvais, who appears in the upcoming sequel “Coming 2 America,” reposted the meme on Instagram from “Real Housewives” fan @themorganletters_.
“You’ve heard of Elf on a Shelf, now get ready for this...” the caption read. In the image, a photoshopped Beauvais sits, in miniature, on the shoulder of producer Pharrell Williams.
The rest isn’t spelled out because it’s obvious — Garcelle on Pharrell.
Of course, the original Elf on the Shelf is a little doll that parents place around the house in the run-up to Christmas — on the mantle, on the stairs, in a stocking or anywhere.
Embracing the spirit of the meme — and the diminutive status of the elf — actress and director Elizabeth Banks took a cue from Beauvais.Elf on the Shelf meme
Her contribution: Hanks on Banks, a mini Tom Hanks photoshopped on her shoulder (Forrest Gump, actually, but close enough).
Banks and Beauvais’ examples generated a slew of others, with famous faces flipping the script like Banks and opting to place someone — or something — small on their shoulders instead of vice versa.
There was “Grease” on Reese, Reese Witherspoon’s take, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
And Penn on Jen, an entry from Jennifer Garner featuring a little Sean Penn (she could have also used Penn Jillette!).Elf on the Shelf meme
Sarah Michelle Gellar went with Bestseller on Gellar. For this, she planted a copy of “The Da Vinci Code” on her shoulder.
Mark Ruffalo kept it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Stark on Mark, placing Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark on his shoulder.
“Wonder Woman 1984″ star Gal Gadot, meanwhile, stayed DC-focused, with Pascal on Gal, featuring her co-star in the movie, Pedro Pascal.Elf on the Shelf meme
“Sopranos” actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler shared her Diggler on Sigler — Mark Wahlberg as porn star Dirk Diggler in “Boogie Nights.”
Actress and singer Idina Menzel went for another actor-on-actor pick with Denzel (Washington) on Menzel.
If she really wanted to, she could’ve done Adele on Adele ... and if you know Oscars (or internet) history, you know why.
The Queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey, went with the similar-minded Carrey on Carey, putting Jim Carrey as the Grinch on her shoulder.
For her part, Kerry Washington went with a little Katy Perry — Perry on Kerry.
Actor and quarantine sensation Leslie Jordan gave us Corden on Jordan. The “Late Late Show” host looks quite at home perched there.Elf on the Shelf meme
“Twin Peaks” star Kyle MacLachlan stretched the whole rhyming thing a bit with Styles on Kyle, not that any Harry Styles fan would mind.
Bryce Dallas Howard took a cue from Witherspoon and opted for title instead of a specific person:
“Miami Vice” on Bryce, with stars Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas on her shoulder.
Julianne Hough from “Dancing with the Stars” had Puff (Daddy) on Hough (which really helps people understand how to pronounce her name, if they didn’t already know).
Actress Michelle Monaghan posted two. The first was Marcel the Shell on Michelle (the little viral shell with shoes voiced by Jenny Slate).
The second: Elle (Woods from “Legally Blonde”) on Michelle, aka Reese Witherspoon.
